Download 2013

Back from Download 2013 today. I've washed the last of the blood from my face and checked the previously unnoticed bruising... I've made it through another year of abuse mostly unscathed... Download was touch and go this year. The death of a good friend and festival-buddy in the days leading up to it hit me hard, but in the end the thought of spending a weekend with friends old and new won out over a miserable weekend on my own. It was the start of that friendship that made the choice to carry on with my trip to Download easier. The people I was camping with this year were people I'd met for the first time in previous years at Download, just as it had been when I'd first met…

The Big Day – the Paris Marathon 2011

The 10th of April 2011 came a lot quicker than I expected. Back in the previous August, when I decided to do a marathon, it was, in my mind, a distant year away. By Saturday night, as I sat in my Paris hotel room it was far, far too close! Everything seemed very straightforward back in August. I'd have a plan. Progress would be steady and assured. How hard could it possibly be? Everything went well up until after my first 10k at Cricklade. From there on in 5k was just my "short" run, the steady climb from 10 to 20 to 30 and so on would move on apace. It was then that my body started to object. My knee had been playing up for a while and was…

The long road to the start line…

Along my road to the Paris Marathon I kept a running blog going as a kind of "encouragement via threat of public humiliation" - if I told everyone about this stuff I'd have to keep it up. The original posts were lost as part of some software upgrade or other, but here's a collection of bits I saved... The body beautiful... Someone's three year old daughter was admiring my "boobs" the other day when I'd taken off my t-shirt after a kick-about with the kids. From the mouths of babes... When I committed to running a marathon next year I knew it was going to be a struggle. I was very unfit and I'd never run further than 5k. My fastest 5k time was 25 minutes (though I was dressed…

The Cricklade 10k

The 3rd of October 2010 saw me try my first 10k event with the Cricklade fun run. 10k: That's about a quarter of a marathon, and about 4k further than I'd run at that point. My key objectives, in order of priority, were: - Don't die. Don't come last Don't stop Overtake whoever is in front of you in the last 200m This post is a re-hash of the blog posts I made in the lead up to it, and in the aftermath, brought over from my old site. The last time I'd run in a group it improved my performance hugely compared to running only with my mentors, Gilles & Eugene. Since then I'd been running solo, so it promised to be an interesting test of how I was…

In the beginning…the fat boy decided to run

With Kevin Costner it was a case of "if you build it, they will come". Back in the August of 2010 I wondered if the same can be true of "if you blog it, you will run". I had been meaning to get fitter for some time but never quite got into the groove. From a flirtation with jogging at the end of the previous year to periodic spells at the gym; all seem to fizzle out after a while. After six-months of sloth I needed to get the spatula out and give myself a slap on the arse: it was time to set a target. The statement I made in my blog was a simple one: "By this time next year I intend to have run a marathon". I…
